As many of you will know Pro-grow is now used by many of the country’s leading garden designers and we are delighted to have been of help recently to Jill Foxley who won a Silver Gilt Award for her Perfumed Garden at this year’s Hampton Court Flower Show. Jill used Pro-Grow Peat Free Soil Conditioner to bed in her plants and was delighted with the results, claiming that they looked even better at the end of the week than when they were just planted - congratulations to Jill as and you can see from this photo the garden really did look great!

From what you have all been saying it is looking like being another bumper year on the vegetable patch and more and more of you are adopting the peat free, recycled message which is now being promoted heavily by all of the leading gardening organisations and experts, including The RHS, who are actively promoting and supporting the Government’s target of a total withdrawal of peat use by home gardeners by 2020.

However many people are still confused on how to ensure the best results when using peat free composts. So we thought it worth repeating our eight simple suggestions on how to get the best from using peat free products.

1. Always, store the compost bags in a dry place and make sure the compost you buy is fresh. Peat Free composts have a definite shelf-life, so ensure that the bags you buy have not been lying in a warehouse for too long – Pro-Grow Peat Free General Purpose Compost is packed fresh on a monthly basis. Once at home keep in a dry place until you use – but do not leave it too long!
2. Check the instructions carefully as formulations do vary. Make sure that the bags you buy have full instructions included on the pack – all products will differ slightly
3. Always wet the compost before using. Peat Free composts are drier than normal multi-purpose brands so lightly wet the compost before using in pots and containers.
4. Water pots and containers little and often to avoid flooding plants and seedlings.
5. Ensure that your pots and containers have good drainage.
6. Always try to leave a 2cm gap between the surface of the compost and the rim of the plant pot.
7. Avoid pressing the compost down to too hard in containers.
8. Many peat free composts are supplied compressed in their bags - ensure it is “fluffed Up” and well aerated before use. Any compost that is still warm is still decomposing and should therefore not be used.
